The 10th International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan

This is an international competition which aims to promote the further development of ceramic industry and culture through international exchanges of ceramic designs and culture.
Outstanding works that suggest innovative ideas and explore the future of ceramics coming from all over Japan and the world will be displayed all together.

Theme

Entries should go beyond traditional concepts in a way that is imaginative and inspired—one that opens the door to the future of ceramic arts.

Entry category

One category
(In previous competitions there were 2 categories, ‘Ceramics Design’ and ‘Ceramic Arts’, but starting with the 11th Competition these have been combined into one category.)

Entry Requirements

  • 1.Pieces must be new creations that have not been exhibited before. (See below for details)
  • 2. Entries are limited to those whose size, shape, and weight do not hinder their ability to be shipped or displayed indoors.
    (The standard entry size: floor space 4.0m² or less, height 4 meters or less)
  • 3.Entries may not have been produced for market nor have been published in newspapers, magazines, exhibitions or websites before the end of the 11th International Ceramics Festival MINO, Japan or before their elimination from the competition, whichever comes first.
    An exception is allowed for those made public in order to secure intellectual property rights.

Applicant Qualifications

None. The competition is open to individuals, groups, and companies.

Number of Entries

Each applicant may submit up to 3 entries.

Entry Fee

Applicants are not required to pay an entry fee.

Official Language

The competition will be officially conducted in Japanese and English.

Starts: Tuesday, November 1st, 2016
Ends : Tuesday, January 10th, 2017
※Note:Entries must be received no later than 5 PM on January 10th, 2017 Japan time. Please ensure plenty of time for your entry to arrive on time, taking care to consider the time difference with Japan and possible delays in delivery.

Judging

The competition is judged over the course of 2 stages.

Stage Medium Judging Method
First Stage Images Individual members of the judging panel select pieces to go on to the final stage.
Final Stage Actual Pieces The judging panel works together to select pieces to be awarded prizes and honorable mentions.

※ No applicant information (name, address, history, etc.) will be disclosed to the panel throughout the entire judging process.
※ Applicants that pass the first stage of judging will be required to ship or deliver their pieces to the organizer by a specific deadline.
※ The following will disqualify an entry from being selected for the final stage.

  • 1.Entries damaged during shipping
  • 2.Entries that do not meet selection standards set forth by the judging panel

※ The Grand Prix winner will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at the expense of the competition organizers.
※ All award entries will become the property of the competition organizers until March 31st, 2019 and afterwards the Grand Prix and Gold Award winning entries will be kept at the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu.
※ All award entries will be displayed in a traveling exhibition in Japan after the festival.
※ Prize money is subject to taxation.
※ The awardees of all prizes and honorable mentions will be presented with a photographic catalog of the competition entries. Corporate applicants will be given two catalogs, one for the organization and one for the individual representing the company.
* The Sakazaki Shigeo Ceramics Award has been established with the aim of producing talented artists.
This prize is awarded to an applicant who is 40 years old or younger when the application period ends.

Exhibition

Prizewinning and honorable mention entries will be displayed at the 11th International Ceramics Festival Mino, Japan between September 15th and October 22nd, 2017.

Application Procedures

There are two ways to apply for the competition.

  • 1.Online
  • 2.Via post (application form and CD-R)
    Specific procedures for each are outlined below.

◆Applying Online

To apply online, go to the International Ceramics Competition website and follow the steps below.

(1) Download the application form from the International Ceramics Festival Mino website

(2) Fill out applicant information
・Indicate whether you are applying from Japan or abroad.
・Indicate whether you are applying as an individual or as a company.
・If you are applying as an individual, attach a headshot in JPEG format. The longer dimension should be equal to 1000 pixels. (The standard image size : Data capacity should be approximately 1MB.) If you are applying as a company, attach a PDF of your corporate logo.
Note : The headshot or corporate logo you provide will be published in the photographic catalogue of the event.

(3) Fill out entry information
・Provide a statement of your representational intentions(design concept) less than 100 characters. This is optional during registration; however, you will be required to submit this information at a later date if your work is selected for the final stage.
Note : The registration system will reject any entries over 100 characters.
・Attach three images of your work in JPEG format. The longer dimension of each image should be equal to 2000 pixels. (The standard image size : Data capacity should be approximately 2MB.) Include one image taken from the front (in case your work consists of several pieces, an image that shows the whole work is needed) and two images taken from different angles. Note: Image data that does not follow the above guidelines will not be accepted.

(4) To enter multiple pieces, repeat step (3) for each work.

【Important notes】
○ Application forms must be completed in either English or Japanese. Forms written in other languages will not be accepted.
○ Application forms must be received no later than 5 PM on January 10th, 2017 Japan time. Late forms will not be accepted. Please ensure plenty of time for your entry to arrive on time, taking care to consider the time difference with Japan and possible delays in electronic delivery.
Note : We expect to receive a large number of entries just before the deadline, which may cause delays or other problems with our servers. We therefore strongly recommend that you submit your application as early as possible to avoid any potential complications.


◆Applying via Post

To apply via post, send (1) an application form and (2) a CD-R to the address indicated below. Specific steps are outlined below.
■ Application Form
Complete the application form, using either the attached copy or downloading one from the International Ceramics Competition website.
・ Separate forms are provided for those applying as an individual or as a company.
・ Provide a statement of your representational intentions (design concept) less than 100 characters. This is optional during registration; however, you will be required to submit this information at a later date if your work is selected for the final stage.
Note : The registration system will reject any entries over 100 characters.

■ CD-R
Prepare a single CD-R with a headshot (or a corporate logo for those applying as a company) as well as images of your work.
・ If you are applying as an individual, attach a headshot in JPEG format. The longer dimension should be equal to 1000 pixels. (The standard image size : Data capacity should be approximately 1MB.) If you are applying as a company, attach a PDF of your corporate logo.
Note : The headshot or corporate logo you provide will be published in the photographic catalogue of the event.
・ Attach three images of your work in JPEG format. The longer dimension of each image should be equal to 2000 pixels. (The standard image size : Data capacity should be approximately 2MB.) Include one image taken from the front (in case your work consists of several pieces, an image that shows the whole work is needed) and two images taken from different angles.
Note: Image data that does not follow the above guidelines will not be accepted.
・Make sure that the images you burn on the CD-R can be read by a Windows machine.
・Write the name of the applicant and the name of the work in English or Japanese on the front of the CD-R.

【Important notes】
○ Applications must arrive by the deadline. Post your entries well in advance, taking care to consider the time difference and possible delays in shipping times.
○ Entry forms must be completed in English or Japanese.
○ If you are entering multiple pieces, you may include the images for all pieces on the same CD-R; however, you must ensure that each image is clearly labeled with the name of the piece so that they can be easily distinguished from one another. Note that separate application forms must be filled out for each entry you submit.

Shipping Entries

Applicants who pass the first stage of judging will be sent a letter requesting that they ship their entries. At the same time, they will receive written instructions on how to display exhibits, labels to attach to their work, packaging labels, credit labels (overseas entrants only), invoice forms (overseas entrants only), detailed shipping instructions, and other useful materials and information.


【Domestic Entrants】

You may either ship your entries to us or deliver them in person. Please note the following guidelines.

■Shipping Costs

Applicants are responsible for all shipping costs (transportation fees, insurance, etc.) in addition to installation and dismantling costs.
Event administrators do carry insurance to cover any damages incurred during packing and return shipping of pieces following the event. However, this insurance only covers any damages incurred while the piece is in the possession of the Japanese shipping company.

【Overseas Entrants】

Shipping Damages and Insurance

Applicants are responsible for any damages or loss incurred prior to works arriving at the address above. Please insure your works if necessary. If damages should occur, the extent of the damage will be reported to the applicant. Note that in some cases the damage may prevent the piece from undergoing the final stage of judging. Please take extra care when wrapping your pieces for transport.

Once works are received, event administrators will take every precaution to keep them safe. Please note, however, that administrators will not be held responsible for damage or loss due to natural disasters or other unavoidable circumstances.

Also note that event administrators are insured for damages up to 300,000 Japanese yen per piece once it arrives at the address above. Damage claims may not exceed this amount.

Note : Only insurance claims of less than 300,000 Japanese yen will be paid. Please understand that this does not mean that every work suffering damages will be paid the maximum amount.

Return of Entries

Applicants who would like their entries returned can either pick them up in person or have them shipped back.
This year, Nippon Express will be handling return packaging and shipping operations.

  • ※ Applicants who would like their entries returned will be sent an estimate for COD (cash on delivery) transportation costs from Japan. Please verify the charges, sign the enclosed return request form, and send it to Nippon Express. If you live in a country that does not accept COD deliveries from Japan, Nippon Express will send you an invoice for the return shipping charges. Your piece will be sent once the company has confirmed receipt of the funds via bank transfer.
  • ※ You must have a FedEx account to receive COD deliveries.
  • ※ The shipping charges listed in the table are estimates to urban addresses within the areas listed. Costs will vary depending on the size of the piece and the actual distance traveled.
  • ※ Shipping charges are current as of June 2016 and are subject to some increase thereafter.
  • ※ The maximum insurable amount for each entry is 300,000 yen. We cannot process any items whose value exceeds this amount.

If you do not wish to have your entry returned

If you do not want your entry returned, check the box next to “I do not want to have the work returned” on your application form. In most cases, pieces that are not returned will be donated to a public institution. In some instances they will be discarded. Unfortunately, we cannot accept requests to donate pieces to specific individuals.

Note: If you do not fill in a return method on your application form, we will assume that you do not want your piece returned.

Notification of Results

In general, all applicants will be notified of the judges’ decision via email. All award winners and honorable mentions will later be notified of the competition results in writing. We cannot respond to individual requests for competition results via telephone or other means.

Presentation of Winning Entries

All award winners and honorable mentions will be displayed in an exhibition at the Ceramic Park MINO and will be included in a photographic catalogue of the event.
Prizewinning entries will also be featured on the International Ceramics Festival Mino website.

Legal Rights

The entrant retains all rights, such as copyright and industrial property rights, over their entry. As such, it is the responsibility of the entrant to protect these rights. Please ensure that all necessary steps are taken (e.g. registering designs) for all entries to be exhibited. The rights regarding exhibition as well as printed or online publication of prizewinning and honorable mention entries, both in competition materials and in other publications issued or authorized by the event administrator, are jointly retained by both the entrant and the sponsor. Your participation in the competition indicates your agreement to these terms and conditions.
