SUMMARY OF COMPETITION

THEME

No specific theme is provided. What is asked for in the three categories is imagination and inspiration expressed in the work, free from conventional ideas; work that will shape the future of ceramics.

ENTRY CATEGORIES

  1. Ceramics Design (A)
    Design entries for mass-produced factory manufactured products, made primarily for practical function
  2. Ceramics Design (B)
    Design entries for individually handmade products reproduced in small quantities, made primarily for practical function
  3. Ceramic Arts
    Any ceramic products creatively conceived

Awards are separated between the Ceramics Design Contest and the Ceramic Arts Contest.

  • The winner of the Grand Prix will be invited to a ceremony. An exhibition of the winner's work will be held the following year (all expenses related to this exhibition will be borne by the sponsors).
  • The awards are subject to tax.
  • In addition, all prize-winners and those whose works are chosen for final evaluation will receive a catalog (pictorial record) of all entries. (However, in the case of group entries, only the representative will receive a catalog).

Qualifications There are no specific qualifications required for contestants.
Both individual and group entries will be accepted.
Number of Entries Each individual or group is allowed up to 3 entries for each category. (total 9 entries)
Originality of Entries Entries must be creations or pieces which have not been exhibited elsewhere. *1
Design drawings or design drawings accompanied by plaster models including other are acceptable.  
Size of Entries The size, weight, and configuration of entries should be such that transportation and delivery are not hindered. *2
The size of any design drawing submitted must be 594mm×840mm.  
  • *1. If it is determined that an entry has infringed upon design right, even after the announcement of the judges' decision, the entry may be barred from selection for the final evaluation and from winning any prize.
  • *2. Entries that may impede transportation or exhibition will not be accepted. (Please contact the Executive Committee for details).

(A) Domestic Contestants

    On the day of submission, the contestant will be given a receipt/claim ticket.
  • All works must be sent with prepaid shipping insurance.

Transportation Fee
  • Cost borne by applicant: expenses incurred in transporting entries to the nearest authorized local courier, such as customs duties, handling charges, packing charges and insurance fees, will be assumed by the individual contestant.
  • Cost borne by the sponsor: airfreight charges incurred in import, including import duties and storage fees.
Contestant shall bear all transportation expenses incurred.

  • Entry labels must be affixed to the back of the entry and on the top and side of each package.
  • Package labels must be clearly visible and affixed to two sides of each package.
  • Credit labels must be clearly visible and affixed to two sides of each package.
    *Packages without credit labels will not arrive in Japan.
  • Insurance on all entries must be secured by the contestant from the time the courier service picks up the work until it is delivered to Ceramics Park MINO. The sponsor will not be held accountable for any accidents or damage to any entries shipped without insurance.

PRECAUTIONS FOR APPLICATION

  • Attached Documents
    Be sure to include an entry form, a display direction form and curriculum vitae. In the absence of the display direction form or photos of the work with any display instructions, it will be understood that it has been left to the discretion of the sponsor on how the entry should be displayed for the contest and presented in the catalogue.
  • Storage of Entries
    • Entries must be packed carefully to avoid damage. The sponsor cannot assume responsibility for any damage sustained to the entries before they have been received.
      *Entries will be unpacked in the presence of three parties; the sponsor, Nippon Express Personnel, and representatives from the judges panel.
    • The sponsor will take every precaution against accidents or damage when storing entries; however, we cannot be held responsible for accidents or damage caused by natural disasters, and others over which we have no control.
    • The sponsor will insure all entries after their arrival to a maximum liability of 300,000 yen. This insurance shall cover the works during the period of judging, storage, transfer and exhibition.
  • Rights and Obligations
    All copyrights, industrial property and rights relating to industrial property, etc. shall be held by the contestants. Contestants, therefore, have a responsibility to protect these rights and should, if necessary, take the appropriate steps to register designs before submitting their work. As the Japanese Patent Office is one of the competition's sponsors, entries are eligible for the exception of the loss of design's originality for six months after the opening of the exhibition. However, contestants shall, by the act of application to this competition, agree that all rights relating to the exhibition of entries that receive prize or are selected for final evaluation in the 7th International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan, including rights related to pictorial records and video/CD-ROM recordings of the exhibition as well as their sale and release, and rights to carry photographs of the entries in publications issued with the sponsor's permission, be held by the sponsor.
  • Official Languages
    The official languages of the International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan shall be limited to Japanese and English.

JUDGING and AWARDS CEREMONY

  • Period of Judging: March 9 to 11, 2005 (three days)
    *All contestants will be notified in writing.
    *All judgments are final. No requests for explanation concerning the judgments shall be accepted.
  • Date of Awards Ceremony: June 30, 2005
    Venue: EXPO Hall at the 2005 World Exposition (Aichi, Japan)

EXHIBITION

All entries selected for the final evaluation will be exhibited.

RETURN OF ENTRIES

  • The entries chosen for Grand Prix and the Gold Awards will become the property of the sponsor.
  • With the exception of the Grand Prix and Gold award winners, works will be returned in the following manner. As a basic rule, any work which the artist does not wish to be returned will be donated to a public institution. However, please be aware that, on occasion, works are discarded. Works cannot be donated to individuals. We ask for your understanding in these matters.

  • Contestants who have requested their entries to be returned will be sent an invoice for shipping from Japan with payment on delivery. After checking the charges, sign the return request form enclosed with the invoice and return it to the sponsor to make a formal application. If contestants are from countries where the COD system is not used, the sponsor will send a bill for all transportation expense. After confirmation of the payment has been made, the entries will be returned.
  • Airfreight charges quoted here are those authorized as of April 1, 2004.
    Please note that the charges for sending an article overseas from Japan are about three times higher than those for sending an article to Japan. These charges may be subject to change.
  • The maximum insurable amount for each item is 300,000 yen. Anything exceeding this amount cannot be delivered.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Pictorial Records

Photographs will be taken of all entries that receive awards or are selected for final evaluation. These photographic records will be printed and offered for sale in the Exhibition Hall during the period of the International Ceramics Festival '05 Mino, Japan. Also, they will be offered for sale through postal mail.
